New Ford Fusion Named Best in Show at NAIAS

The North American International Auto Show is always a place where automakers go to show off their most impressive new designs, far-out concepts, and advancements in technology.  With so much competition, it can be hard to impress.  However, Ford didn’t seem to have this problem at the 2012 show last week, thanks to the debut of the redesigned 2013 Fusion.  In fact, the new sedan was named “Best in Show” by AutoWeek.

Even AutoWeek was taken aback by their decision to choose an everyday sedan.  According to Editor Wes Raynal, “It’s very rare for a midsize sedan to win Best in Show. I think it’s the first of a lot of awards the Fusion is going to win this year.” And so far, he’s right.  The new Fusion also received EyesOn Design recognition from the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology during the show.

Aside from its sleek new design, other features that had onlookers craving more include impressive fuel economy predictions, thanks to EcoBoost technology and a hybrid model, Ford’s new Lane-Keeping System, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, and Ford’s BLIS with cross-traffic alert.  Even long-time Chief Creative Officer J Mays is excited, stating that “I’ve been with the company for 13 years and I can truly say this is the best car ever to come out of the design and engineering center in Dearborn. We are delighted for the entire global design team, because this really was a global effort.”

Ford Reveals 2013 Fusion and Makes Big Announcement in Detroit

Ford made a big splash at the North American International Auto Show this week with the official debut of the 2013 Ford Fusion. The automaker also announced plans for a plug-in hybrid Fusion Energi a few months after the Fusion arrives in showrooms.

2013 Ford Fusion

The 2013 Fusion joins many other sedans in offering a 4-cylinder engine only. Other updates to the sedan include new styling that resembles a four door coupe more than a standard sedan and a multitude of standard and optional features. These features include the latest version of SYNC with MyFord Touch, BLIS, SOS post-crash alert, and an optional lane-keeping aid.  A hybrid model of the Fusion will also be available, with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, based on the 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo.

2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid

While news of a redesigned Fusion has been floating around for months, the announcement of the Fusion Energi took everyone by surprise.  According to Ford, this PHEV will receive an EPA fuel mileage estimate over 100 MPGe. The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid will go on sale about five months after the Fusion’s release in late summer or early fall of this year.

Ford Turns the 2012 Focus into Fashion

2011 marked the 100th year of Ford in Britain, and the automaker decided to commence the yearlong centennial celebration in an interesting way: by turning the 2012 Focus into fashion.  Ford commissioned two fashion designers to create haute couture from pieces of the popular sedan.

Judy Clark, a Scottish Designer of the Year nominee, was chosen to create a gown.  The design was inspired by the Edwardian period, and used numerous small engine and gear parts to create an oversized bustle.  Twin red taillights hang at the hips, giving the dress visual width and creating a sway.  The layered skirt represents flowing fuel, and a motorcycle jacket made from seat covering compliments the look with a speedometer set to 60 mph on the back.  In addition to car parts, other materials such as diesel-colored tweed, lace, leather, silk chiffon, and spray paint were also used in the creation.

For a matching necklace, Ford turned to English designer Katherine Hawkins.  The designer, who does not actually drive herself, decided to go for a “metropolis, robot-esque” look. Hawkins broke down the Focus’s center stack buttons to use as the focal point on the oversized necklace and dangled coil springs below the buttons. Various computer chips were also used to create an elegant, yet futuristic automotive design.

While you likely will not be able to find these pieces in a store, they certainly give a new look to the 2012 Focus. You can also check out a video of the creations on YouTube.
