New Ford Technology At 2016 CES

According to Wired Magazine, “Ford doesn’t sound much like an automaker these days.” The magazine is referring to Ford’s recent presentation at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show. Ford hardly talked about regular ol’ vehicles during its presentation. Instead, the automaker talked of mobile apps, possible use of drones, and autonomous vehicles.

Of course, Ford is addressing crowds at the Consumer Electronics Show. It’s a tech show and so the focus is going to be on new technology. It’s not as if Ford can’t still make extraordinary vehicles. Look at the brand new Ford GT, for goodness sake.

Ford technology has been heading skyward. Literally. The automaker has been researching drone-to-vehicle communications. In the autonomous technology department, Ford has added 20 more autonomous vehicles to its fleet of 10.

One of the most interesting tidbits to come out of the Ford camp at CES is that the automaker’s Smart Device Link software is going open source. That means anyone can build on top of it.

If we learned anything from CES, it’s that Ford is becoming a tech leader, increasingly on par with companies like Google, even while solidifying their reputation as one of the world’s greatest automakers.

Ford SYNC Technology: Taking Intelligence to a Whole Other Level

Ford has set out on a mission to take its vehicles to a whole other level of intelligence.  They just recently built their 10 millionth car with built-in Ford SYNC technology!  We would say they are well on their way to completing their quest!

Now what is Ford SYNC technology you ask?  Well, it’s an in-vehicle system that leaves you completely hands-free.  It integrates mobile devices, such as a Smartphone, and allows the driver to make hands-free calls, change the song or radio station, and use other applications with just a simple voice command, leaving you to concentrate on driving safely.  And that’s only the beginning.

Ford offers 15 different options for the SYNC technology in your Ford vehicle.  Yes, you heard right, FIFTEEN various options that include all of the following:

Ford Developing Fully-Automated Parking Technology

Fully-Automated Parking TechnologyFord Motor Company has recently revealed details on a new technology that will change the way we park forever. The new fully-automated parking technology could potentially allow drivers to park their Ford with the push of a button!

“Parking in today’s cities can be stressful and difficult,” explains vice president of Product Development at Ford of Europe, Barb Samardzich. “We want to make it as easy, efficient and accurate as possible – and that means exploring new concepts and approaches.”

Fully Assisted Parking Aid, while currently only developed as a prototype, controls vehicle steering, gear selection, forward and reverse motion. Ultrasonic sensors used in the system would be able to detect a suitable parking space. Once in neutral, the Full Assisted Parking Aid system takes control and parks with ease.

Boston Family Uses Ford Fusion For Power During Irene

BOSTON – When Julie Mullen and John Sullivan became Ford Fusion owners in 2010, they knew they would enjoy their car but didn’t think about how their pet fish would take it –until Hurricane Irene touched down.

“Hurricane Irene hit the Northeast and hit Massachusetts so, we lost power Sunday morning at about 9 a.m.,” said Mullen who lives in the Boston area with her husband Sullivan. “It was already daylight so we had light, but as the day went on it was getting kind of old not having power.”

According to Mullen, they instantly relied on their cell phones to keep connected –occasionally running the car to power them up. Then their son reminded them that their Fusion had enough power to keep them functioning inside their home – not just a cigarette lighter, but an actual outlet where they could plug in some necessities.

“As soon as Adam said that my husband ran off to get his orange outdoor power-cord,” she said. “It let us move away from just having flashlights. I don’t know what the fish would have done, they would have been dead.”

So for one week, rather than being confined to candle light and cell phone updates, they ran an extension cord from their car to their home and continued their daily routines; powering the fish tank, plugging in lights, charging laptops, cooking food and more.

“Seems like small stuff but it all adds up,” said Mullen.

The Fusion has a standard 110-volt power outlet located near the rear seat. That’s the same voltage that can be found in most wall plugs. So, Mullen’s use of the outlet didn’t cause any damage.

“A friend was telling me for a long time that Ford was coming back up with quality,” she stated, listing it as one of the many reasons they purchased the car. They preferred Ford for the respected honesty, quality and technology – versus other hybrids available on the market.

Prior to the wrath of Hurricane Irene they used the outlet a few times for small things but never to this extreme.

Wow!  And they said cars just powered our dreams and ambitions.

Hajek Motorsports Breaks 2 Land Speed Records with Ford F-250 Super Duty

WENDOVER, Utah, Aug. 19, 2011 – Ford F-Series is best known for its unparalleled capability and power, but now it’s found a place in the history books.  Hajek Motorsports has broken two land speed records using both a diesel and biodiesel-powered 2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats.  Using a mostly stock truck with the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8, the team achieved a speed of 171.123 mph on regular diesel and 182 mph on B20 biodiesel.

The Ford truck broke the B Production Diesel Truck record of 166.850 mph by a Duramax diesel GMC. This class is normally comprised of race vehicles with extensive aftermarket modifications. The F-250 that Hajek Motorsports ran is something of a rarity as it used extensive production parts to perform at high speeds.

Underscoring that the 2011 Super Duty is the cleanest Power Stroke ever, a land speed record was also set using soy-based biodiesel fuel. The truck broke the biodiesel land speed record of 130.614 mph.

Every 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel can operate on a mixture of diesel up to 20 percent biofuel. This capability is significant for the Hajek Motorsports team given its history and support for sustainable farm-based fuels and desire to prove that speed and performance are not compromised by using fuels like E85 and B20 biodiesel.

“Racing is part of Ford Motor Company’s DNA so it’s only natural for us to build a race vehicle that demonstrates Ford’s leadership in the diesel and biodiesel truck market,” said Brent Hajek, Hajek Motorsports owner. “The F-250 is an excellent truck with amazing capabilities. I’m amazed at how, with very few changes from stock, we were able to accomplish this.”

Hajek, a soybean and corn farmer from Oklahoma, knows a thing or two about Ford F-250s and biodiesel fuel. He owns six for use on his farm, with his 1997 Ford F-250 having accumulated more than 400,000 miles.

“Super Duty has always been the leader in the heavy-duty truck segment,” said Brian Rathsburg, Ford Super Duty marketing manager. “Breaking these records reinforces our leadership position, allows us to raise awareness around the truck’s biodiesel capabilities, and gives us an opportunity to reach out to enthusiasts in a fun and engaging way.”

Ford engineers teamed up with Hajek Motorsports to design and install the modifications to the production-level truck. Changes were made only to the top-end components of the engine including the high-pressure fuel pump, fuel injectors and turbochargers for more fuel flow. The compression ratio was modified as well.

The engineering that went into the base engine provided us with a rock-solid foundation to start from,” said Paul Niessen, powertrain engineer. “And it worked out great since we increased the output of the engine by more than 50 percent over production with just a few changes.”

Work on a chassis dynamometer before the attempt proved the engine was able to adapt to biodiesel fuel and deliver on both horsepower and fuel economy. It also verified the performance of the production transmission and drivetrain.

Components were added for safety purposes, including a full roll cage and five-point harness.

Delivering more
The 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbocharged diesel produces best-in-class 400 horsepower and 800 lb.-ft. of torque with best-in-class fuel economy, further strengthening Super Duty’s best-in-class towing and payload capabilities. The Ford-engineered diesel engine uses inboard exhaust architecture, an automotive-industry first for a modern production diesel engine.

Key features of the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbocharged diesel engine:

  • Compacted graphite iron engine block
  • Aluminum cylinder heads
  • Single-sequential turbocharger with double-sided compressor wheel mounted on a single shaft uniquely center-mounted on the engine block
  • Unique inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture
  • High-pressure fuel system – new Bosch 29,000-psi common-rail fuel-injection system
  • Standard biodiesel compatibility up to B20

Ford Reveals Buyer’s Tastes

Ford data reveals   about buyers around the US.  Who would think, looking around, that white was NOT the favorite Ford color in Arizona.  Would you guess Molten Orange?  Gold, silver, and finally, white round out the top colors. 

Seattle and San Francisco must have problems getting lost and parking their cars because they are tops in; BLIS, rear view cameras, active park assist, and navigation. 

You would think us Arizonans would own the air conditioned seat category, but we didn’t even rank in the top 5.  Would you have guessed Seattle, Denver, and San Francisco.  How about heated seats?  Can you believe Atlanta and Charlotte are in the top 5. 

Rainy and cold Seattle is also tops in moon roofs.  I guess better for watching the storm clouds!

Hybrid vehicles are #1 and #2 in Seattle and San Francisco, but Phoenix is #5 on this list.  Thanks 43 mpg with AC Fusion Hybrid.

In Arizona, we prefer diesels, hybrids,and  manual transmissions, but have no preference on gas engine size.

Those areas of the country looking for V-8 power include; Orlando, Memphis, Charlotte, Houston, and Seattle.  The economically minded (4 cylinder) people live in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Detroit, Boston, and Denver. 

Coastal cities like muted colors while the Midwest has an affinity for red.  The east coast is definately green. 

New Yorkers consume the most vehicles with rear seat DVD systems.  Turns out Sponge pants Bob really is an effective babysitter.

The national pick-up truck capital is still shared by Dallas and Houston.  This is also the area with the highest demand for tow packages.  95% of Super Duty customers tow with their trucks. 

Using the data Ford collects allows it to maximize the model mix and deliver vehicles that actually meet customers need regionally.  The imports should try to figure this out.

Of course, if you want an east coast color, with Seattle options, Denver seats, and Texas towing capability, all you need to do is drop by Sanderson Ford.  If we don’t have it, we’ll be happy to order it for you!

Ford F550 Hybrid Chassis Cab Coming

Ford announced this week that they have teemed up with Azure Dynamics to produce the 2013 Hybrid F-550 chassis cab.  It will be available in all engine and chassis length combinations.  They have also agreed to provide the technology for the F-350 and F-450 chassis’. 

Azure Dynamics already provides the power systems on the Transit Connect Electric (available now at Sanderson), and the E-450 Hybrid electric step van and shuttle bus. 

The hybrid chassis will be built as a “ship-thru” option allowing the Ford transportation system to move the vehicles thereby saving on the cost and time of additional transportation logistics. 

It is expected that the chassis cab market could grow by 50% in the next few years as fleet oerators start replacing equipment that was delayed due to the economy.  This gives them a great option to help manage unpredictable fuel costs and clean energy goals.

Ford SYNC Adds Live Operators

  • Ford is beta testing an Operator Assist feature for the cloud-based network of SYNC Services, giving all registered Services users complimentary access to a live operator for help with business searches and address entry for turn-by-turn directions.  About 70 percent of calls to SYNC Services are for business searches and/or directions
  • SYNC Services provides access to more than 14 million business listings.  
  • Getting directions or finding a business using SYNC Services has become even easier thanks to a new feature called Operator Assist that allows users to instantly connect with a live person. 
  • Operator Assist is only a voice command away, making it part of the growing list of cloud-based driver aids offered by Ford Motor Company. The new feature provides customers with the ability to safely connect with a live person who can quickly access information databases to help drivers get where they’re going.  

Operator Assist is currently in a beta test trial phase and being offered as a complimentary feature for registered users of SYNC Services. No additional software or hardware is needed.   

“Ford is committed to continuously improving the ownership experience and delivering the level of connectivity that customers want,” said Doug VanDagens, director, Ford Connected Services Solutions Organization. “By leveraging what’s available in the cloud, we continue to innovate and improve our customers’ experience without having to touch the vehicle or inconvenience the owner.”
 
How it works
Cloud-based, on-demand, voice-activated SYNC Services provides access to information about traffic, news, sports, weather, horoscopes, stock quotes, and movie listings along with business searches and turn-by-turn directions.
 
Operator Assist is available for the directions and business search functions of SYNC Services. Seventy percent of all SYNC Services calls are for business search and directions, said David Gersabeck, product manager, SYNC Services.
 
Using advanced vehicle sensors, integrated GPS technology and comprehensive map and traffic data, the SYNC Services automated system delivers turn-by-turn directions to the user. Further, with access to more than 14 million business listings, SYNC Services’ automated system directs users to the businesses they seek.
 
Now, with Operator Assist, at any time during a business search or directions interaction between the user and the SYNC Services automated system, the user can say, “Operator,” confirm his or her request to speak with an operator, and connect to a live operator. This system gives Ford customers the choice of interfacing with a live operator or utilizing the interactive voice recognition system.
 
“Our customers asked for additional assistance in situations where their voice request was not understood,” said Gersabeck. “If you want the most reliable user experience, enabling alternative methods for customers to access information will increase success, which is where Operator Assist factors into the equation.”
 
In the event a user says an address or business that the automated system can’t identify, the user will be prompted with the option to connect to a live operator. If the user confirms he or she would like to speak with an operator for further assistance, the system automatically connects the user to the live operator.
 
When a live operator assists with a business search, the user can choose to receive turn-by-turn directions to the business, receive a text message with name, address and phone number information about the business (applies to certain phone carrier networks), or be directly connected to the phone number of the business.
 
When a live operator assists with address entry, the user can have the directions sent directly to the vehicle.
 
“We want Ford SYNC Services customers to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing they can get where they’re going or want to go,” said Gersabeck. “Being able to connect with a live person at any time contributes to that peace of mind.”
 
The live operator services are provided by MyAssist, a leading live assistance and telematics service company for individuals and businesses based in Stevens Point, Wis.
