Michael Martinez of Automotive News tweeted a thread of updates from the annual Ford shareholder meeting, stating in one tweet that the CEO of Ford, Jim Hackett, “confirms the upcoming Bronco SUV will come in a hybrid variant as Ford focuses on electrifying its lineup.”
The tweet sparked a lot of interest in the automotive community, especially with how little is still known about the Bronco, which is set to debut in 2020 as part of the 2021 model year. Barely any spy shots have circulated so far, and while we know that the 2021 Bronco’s styling will be boxy and retro to echo the original, we don’t know much else.
According to MotorTrend, Ford will invest $11 billion in expanding its hybrid and electric lineup over the next several years, so it’s not a big surprise that the Bronco will be part of that push for greener cars and SUVs.
Details haven’t been released on what the Bronco’s engine options will look like, but industry journalists assume it will have the same four-cylinder turbo and V6 options as other Ford SUVs, and now a hybridized option. The Ford Bronco hybrid powertrain may be the same or similar to the 2.5-liter iVCT Atkinson-style hybrid engine found on the 2020 Ford Escape.
