Ford Focus: 2012 Best-Selling Car in the World

2013 Ford FocusThe numbers are in – and the Ford Focus was the world’s best-selling car in 2012.  According to Polk, which surveyed world new-car registration data and recently revealed the results, Ford actually took three of the top spots with the Focus, Fiesta, and F-Series.

The two largest countries for the Focus were the United States and China, with a little over ¼ of all Focuses sold worldwide being in China.  Over 250,000 Focuses were sold in China, while the U.S. accounted for a little fewer than 246,000 sales.  On the other hand, the Fiesta had more success internationally than it did in America, with only 7.9% of all Fiestas being sold in the U.S.  The third Ford to top the list, the F-Series, was the only model that sold more vehicles in America than it did internationally, with 82.1% of all Ford trucks being sold in its home country.

The Focus and Fiesta’s international success may have been unexpected for some, but it should be no surprise that the F-Series would hang out at the top of this list, as it has been the number one selling truck for 37 years.

New Ford F-150 to Feature Aluminum Body

Ford Motor Company has announced that they may be making a major change to the design of future Ford F-150s. Upcoming models could feature an aluminum body, as opposed to the steel body of old.

The change to aluminum is being done in response to tougher federal fuel economy targets.  In 2011, the Obama administration was able to pass new fuel-economy regulations that require every U.S. vehicle fleet to average 54.5 mpg by 2025.

The switch to aluminum will cut the F-150’s weight by roughly 700 pounds, which is a 15 percent decrease in overall weight.  Not only will the initial weight reduction increase mpg, but it will also open the door so that Ford is able to outfit the F-150 with smaller, more fuel efficient engines.

“Aluminum is certainly a big opportunity for weight reduction,” said Raj Nair, the global chief of product development. “We have been public that weight reduction is going to be a big part of our strategy.”

The aluminum body will only be used on the F-150.  Ford’s F-250 and heavy trucks do not fall under the new fuel-economy guidelines.
