The coronavirus pandemic has shifted the nation’s focus towards preventing its spread and caring for those who are affected. The Ford Motor Company has committed to partner with GE Healthcare to produce 50,000 ventilators within 100 days of the April 20th start-date with an additional 30,000 coming in the month after as needed.

Ford’s manufacturing capabilities will allow for production at a much higher scale while GE Healthcare’s clinical expertise will guide the efforts. The ventilator design is licensed from Airon Corp and is easily scalable thanks to its lack of a need for electricity; the GE/Airon Model A-E ventilator is powered by air pressure and meets the needs of almost all COVID-19 patients.

Production began on April 20th at Ford’s Rawsonville Components Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. 500 paid volunteers will work around the clock over three shifts to produce 7,200 ventilators every week, as opposed to the 3 per day Airon was building before.

Ford expects to have produced 1,500 ventilators by the end of April, 12,000 come June 1st, and 50,000 by the 4th of July in a concentrated attempt to help the U.S. government reach its goal of building 100,000 ventilators in 100 days.

Though business is a lot slower than we’re used to at Sanderson Ford, we’re glad that Ford is investing so many resources in helping people around the country!
